It’s #AAPI Heritage Month, and we are taking this opportunity to spotlight some of our talented team members. Meet Casey Malia Sledzinski, our Human Resources Director. While Casey was born in Washington state, her family has strong ties to Hawai’i. “My grandma was born on a boat travelling from the Philippines to Hawai’i and my grandfather was from Kauai. They raised their kids on the island until the sugar cane plantations were closed and they had to move to the mainland for work,” shared Casey. “We maintained our connection to our cultural heritage through hula dancing, celebrating life events with luaus and sharing culturally significant food through time honored recipes.” The influence of her Hawaiian heritage even carried through to her work life. “My Hawaiian family values deeply felt connections to people and to the land. We believe that we are given the task of protecting the Earth and safeguarding the people we meet, so I bring those principles to work with me.” In honor of this year’s theme, Advancing Leaders Through Innovation, Casey shares a bit about King David Kalakaua—the last king of Hawaii. “Kalakaua worked to empower the Hawaiian people to seek further education. He traveled extensively to broaden his outlook and at the same time he worked to revitalize the Hawaiian culture, language and hula dance which had all previously been banned. I admire him because he welcomed what was new (he even once met with Thomas Edison for a demonstration of electricity and discussed its use on the Hawaiian Islands) without losing sight of the importance of maintaining and celebrating our heritage.” For a look into the Hawaiian culture, Casey invites us to watch videos from the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula competition in Hilo, Hawai'i. #AAPIHeritageMonth #Hawaii
